Around 104 workers were detained by the police from a Samsung Electronics plant in Tamil Nadu on Monday as they were planning to hold a march without taking necessary permissions. The workers have been striking for more than a week. They are demanding higher salaries and recognition of their union backed by the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU). The factory which is located near Chennai plays a major role in building up Samsung’s $12 billion revenue in India by manufacturing home appliances.
Protest for lower wages
The protest staged by the workers was stopped by the police because it was creating public disruption as the area was close to hospitals, schools, and colleges. K Shanmugam, Kancheepuram district police officer mentioned that the protest would have affected the area as well as daily life. The workers have been temporarily detained in a wedding hall because of the shortage of space in the police station.
The strike will affect India’s manufacturing growth story
The strike has created tension at Samsung’s home appliance factory where more than 1000 workers out of a total of 1,800 workers have chosen to leave their duty. The company is facing pressure as it is planning to do job cuts and has been accused of violating competition laws. As per a Reuters report, a discussion between the workers, the company, and government officials has been initiated but the issue has not been resolved yet.
The ongoing protests have raised concerns related to the impact of India’s push to attract foreign investment as it has positioned itself as a global player in the field of manufacturing sector. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Make in India’ initiative aims to triple electronics production by $500 billion but unrest like this can affect the development.
