The India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) on Tuesday said display manufacturing in the country needs special attention as India is currently the third-largest consumer of display products.
The government is providing 50% fiscal support under the Rs 76,000-crore semiconductor incentive scheme for setting up display fabrication, but so far of the three applications received for setting up display fabs, none has got approval.
“…we have not been able to break ground beyond display assembly. Display has a major 15% to 20% position in the Bill of Material which is close to the other logic, memory and semiconductors. It’s a matter of great concern,” said Pankaj Mohindroo, chairman of ICEA.
The association represents companies like Apple, Foxconn, Lava, and other Chinese handset and electronics companies.
“This (display) sector needs special attention and we are determined to make India a strong display manufacturing nation,” Mohindroo added.
For India, display manufacturing presents a unique opportunity to attract international companies seeking to diversify their display supply chains beyond certain geographies. This in a way would complement the domestic demand and also boost their exports from India, experts said.
Among devices such as mobile phones, televisions, notebooks, tablets, desktop, India’s demand for display is being driven by mobile phones, according to ICEA.
The overall demand for display in the country rose to 338.4 million units in 2023, up from 303.7 million units in 2022. Out of that, 310 million display units were for mobile phones in 2023. The overall display demand in the country is expected to touch 383.5 million units in 2026.
