Samsung India on Monday announced the signing of a memorandum of agreement with the workmen committee to make Chennai factory a better place to work in its bid to end the ongoing labour strike. However, E Muthukumar, CITU Tamil Nadu state secretary and president of the unrecognised SIWU, said the protest would continue. He dismissed media reports suggesting a resolution has been reached, calling them “far from the truth.”
The agitating workers and CITU have been maintaining that ‘workmen committee’ is an attempt by the company to prevent the formation of a formal union and it doesn’t represent workers.
The signing of the agreement follows intense negotiations involving three Tamil Nadu ministers, who facilitated talks between Samsung’s management and the striking workers. The strike, which began on September 9, is spearheaded by the CITU.
Tamil Nadu industries minister TRB Rajaa, MSME minister TM Anbarasan and labour minister CV Ganesan held tripartite talks on Monday at the state secretariat with Samsung representatives and worker delegates. The meeting came after the industries minister held separate discussions over the weekend with the Samsung management and CITU leaders.
One of the key demands of the striking workers has been the recognition of the Samsung India Workers Union (SIWU), which is backed by CITU.
