Godrej Consumer Products (GCPL) on Friday introduced a new mosquito repellent in liquid vapourisers and agarbattis, using an indigenously-developed and patented molecule Renofluthrin. This is India’s first such molecule, the company said, which in the past would import its molecules for its household insecticides from countries such as Japan.
“The formulations made of Renofluthrin are two times more effective against mosquitoes, compared to any other registered formulation in liquid vapouriser format currently available in India. It is also effective two hours after being switched off,” Sudhir Sitapati, MD & CEO, GCPL, said during the launch.
Rigourous testing and approval, Sitapati said, had been done by the Central Insecticide Board and Registration Committee (CIB&RC) to underscore the new product’s efficacy and safety.
Renofluthrin, he added, was effective against multiple mosquito species, including the Anopheles and Aedes mosquitoes, which cause malaria and dengue.
GCPL says that along with its partner, Delhi-based Shogun Organics, it extensively invested in research and development for over 10 years to develop Renofluthrin and its formulations. Patented by Shogun Organics, GCPL holds exclusive usage rights of this molecule in India for about 6-8 years, it added.
The company also hopes to cut the widespread use of mosquito repellents like incense sticks, containing unregistered and illegal Chinese molecules, with its agarbattis containing Renofluthrin. These have been priced at Rs 10 for a pack of 10 incense sticks by GCPL – in line with competition.
Similarly, its new liquid vapourisers are also competitively priced, at Rs 100 for a machine plus refill. Refills alone are available for Rs 85 each, the company said.
“Liquid vaporisers constitute 50% of our household insecticide business. We are hoping to grow our household insecticide business in double-digits on the back of new product launches such as these,” Sitapati said.
Research by Goodknight, GCPL’s mosquito repellent brand, revealed that 63% of Indians (mostly in urban areas) prioritise liquid vapourisers for protecting their families.
The latest innovation in GCPL’s home insecticides category comes after it launched differentiated products such as a Re 1 fast card, outdoor repellents in the form of roll-ons, and repellent agarbattis, among others.
